No Real Cause For Tears

First when I looked in you eyes
I saw the wide world turning
There was honour and high surprise
And the flames of Albion burning
The blackbird at Magdalene’s gate
Sang out her worries for me
But now my fear is great
My god is taken from me.

All that you promised me
it was a thing hard got you
A tower by the side of the sea
And the trumpets crying for you
Twelve towns and a palace in each
And a fine white court by the river
Three ships of gold on the beach
Under masts of moon-wrought silver.

Now in the gathering night
The dogs are speaking of you
Through the woods in the last of the night
The lonely bird it is you
Yet there’s no real cause for tears
Though you’ve taken all before me
Perhaps in a thousand years
Some kindness may restore me.
